...I know, 'tis the season but the Jekyll and Hyde teams are really KILLING my football picks! I know, any given Sunday and all that jazz, but seriously, there are some teams in the NFL this season who honestly can't decide whether they're boom or bust - and they vacillate practically every week. Fine for the casual observer I suppose, but for those of us trying to pick the winners? You people are driving us NUTS - how do you pick a winner when you're not sure which team will show up?
So let's start with the Giants. Plenty of talent, expected to be good, right? They open up by laying an egg at Washington so you question, yes? Well the next few weeks they do OK, so you start picking them again. Then they almost lose to Arizona (yikes!) and the DO actually lose to Seattle (double yikes!). So you're thinking, hmm now they are up against the red-hot (wow, can't believe I'm saying this) Buffalo Bills and WHAT? they pull it out? Giants +1, MRs picks - ick!
Then you have the Bears. Now, their wins and losses are honestly more understandable - they lose to the defending champion Packers, the Saints, the red-hot (again I can't believe I'm saying this) Lions, but in the midst of all of it, you just can't tell what kind of team they are. I got this week right on them, but they're still giving me pause.
Now we come to where it really hurts. Those who know me know I'm a three team gal. Yes, I know, how can you do that? Accept it, it is what it is. I'm a business person after all - I must hedge my emotional bets come football season. I grew up a Saints fan, what do you expect?
So now I'm Panthers, Steelers, Saints - and yes there is a reason for all of them. Sad to say, 2 of the 3 are on my Jekyll and Hyde list. And no it's not the Panthers - they were supposed to be bad and actually Cam Newton is exceeding my expectations - I'm actually watching again.
The Steelers - you know I love them but what happened to the Steel curtain? And a Steelers team that can't run the ball - WHATTTTT???? It's a sad day when I can't pick my Steelers with confidence.
And even the Saints - finally after years of bag-over-the-head fandom - they come through! They win it all! They've still got that team plus some - and they struggle with the Jaguars and then LOSE to the Bucs? No offense to the Bucs - they've made an impressive run the last few years - but goodness! 4 turn-overs? 3 Brees picks? HUH???? And then they lose their coach to an injury worse than most will ever see on the field. Get well soon Sean - they obviously need you!
My point is, the NFL is a wacky place, but perhaps a little wackier than usual this year. Did you know that 8 teams, fully 25% of the league have 0 or 1 wins? We're at week 7 and the pundits are talking about who should tank the rest of the season to try to get Andrew Luck out of Stanford - IF he comes out for the draft this year. Really?
To borrow one of my favorite phrases - "come ON man!" And don't even get me started on Handshake-gate - if you haven't seen it 1200 times already I'll just let you google it. Suffice it to say coaches should behave better.
That's it - hopefully plenty of cocktail party sports fodder for you - I'm off to study up for next week's picks...like it will do me any good.
