So yesterday Apple released their long-awaited iOS5 operating system which touts moving everything to "the cloud" so that all of your devices stay synced "automagically." Sounded great to me, I'm a big fan of technology - WHEN it just works. Download a song on the iPhone and it is automagically synched to the computer, iPad, whatever - YES! Sounds good to me!
So last night I stayed up all hours upgrading and syncing all of my toys - only to get up this AM and find that my iPad notes program had gotten overwritten from one computer to the other and somehow erased all my data! Argh! So of course, now I'm caught in that infamous love-hate loop with my techy toys. I love them when they work, but immediately fly into a rage when they don't. I'm sure no one else has ever experienced that!
Enter my good friend and Tech HERO, Dave. With the patience of a saint and tech skills of...well, who knows, someone a lot better than me!...he manages to figure it out, restore my data and get me all straightened out and happily living in "the cloud."
A few lessons here for us technical "common folk:"
1) Don't be like me and try to rush into fixing everything - make your update and give it time to settle before you start meddling again
2) Consider reading and attempting to fully understand the technology and directions first - I know, anathema...ugh!
3) If you are trying to get into the new Apple cloud environment - make sure you have ONE "source of truth" for all of your data and sync everything to that one source (and starting off I don't mean the cloud - one computer as a base)
4) Most importantly, be VERY nice to your tech savvy friends and then beg for help when you screw it up!
All hail the tech heroes!
wow. sounds wretchedly complicated...
ReplyDeleteyes and no - think I'm primarily suffering the pains of being an early adopter!
